In His Grip

My heart had come to prefer
Being held by another.
It felt safe there.
In its place
I held the heart of the other.

Until the day
My heart was handed back to me.
Pieces hanging by a thread.

How can I hold the pieces
Of my broken heart
While the other’s
Still beats within me?

There’s only One
Whose grip is more secure than mine.
It’s into His incomparable hands
I must give
Both hearts.

  2. Will the hurt or the ink dry up first. Another powerful piece, Paula. I look forward to, and dread, the day your poetry leads off into a different direction. What you write now is so primal, yet beautiful. If only happiness could shine another light on your talent. Just keep writing.

  3. Powerful words. There’s something sad about the poem, but I love how it ends with the comfort God offers us. Handing our life over to him is difficult, but in the end, very much worth it. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful piece.
