Under A Pewter Sky

UNDER A PEWTER SKY

stubborn, obstinate, intractable
words a father doesn’t want to hear
in reference to his own son;
yet I see it in his eyes
(I know it’s true)
and there are few options
but to accommodate his wishes;
I have to let him follow his heart

—which is beating for that
beyond his father’s arms,
eyes set on the sea,
the green of the alley’s other side,
that which waits beyond the lane—

I will be ridiculed
for squandering my love,
he will believe he’s getting away
with something by leaving
his brother to tending the flocks;
perhaps one day he will understand
a father’s love reaches further
than the sea
