my small stones
for July 2011

2011-07-31
my month of small stones
joined many from far and wide:
a river of stones

2011-07-30
the patchwork of clouds
scatters showers here and there;
nice but not enough

2011-07-29
one heart opens and
another one lets go when
kitten gets new home

2011-07-28
a cloudless blue sky
comes to an end only when
my sight is clouded

2011-07-27
the edge of the cliff
can be pushed further away
by a well placed word

2011-07-26
just entertainment?
no; a DVD is two
hours of escape

2011-07-25
tears are important
I shouldn’t try to stop them ~
instead, let them speak

2011-07-24
great words of wisdom
can be found in odd places ~
even a cartoon

2011-07-23
a half-day away
can feel like a vacation ~
…just what I needed…

2011-07-22
distance between friends
nearly imperceptible
in the world of “e-”

2011-07-21
from seven floors up
the city looks really green
not so, down below

2011-07-20
sometimes feeling sad
supercedes all emotions;
praying it will change

2011-07-19
much needed rainfall
provides nourishment to more
than just the dry land

2011-07-18
a mere two minutes
can seem an eternity
when life is pending

2011-07-17
mini marshmallows
atop baked sweet potatoes
made me smile today

2011-07-16
berries in the fridge
can be a silver lining
to living alone

2011-07-15
on hot summer days
relief and a smile can come
from freshly squeezed limes

2011-07-14
the pain of grieving
is felt from two states away
when friends are hurting

2011-07-13
full moon approaches
I can’t stop looking at it
another month passed

2011-07-12
in a brief moment
through laughter shared with a friend
respite can be found

2011-07-11
afternoon sunshine
creates dancing images
that entertain cats

2011-07-10
canvas, paint and brush
gave a chance to try a new
creative outlet

2011-07-09
beautiful roses
surrounded the happy pair
as they said “I do.”

2011-07-08
parking in the shade
makes a world of difference
in South Texas sun

2011-07-07
silence is filled with
a variety of sounds ~
Really. Just listen.

2011-07-06
sometimes, more is said
in the hug from a dear friend
than words could convey

2011-07-05
relief was granted
as the one cloud in the sky
passed before the sun

2011-07-04
droplets of water
can simply make you wet; or
produce much laughter

2011-07-03
trumpet shaped flowers
perfectly designed by God
for the hummingbirds

2011-07-02
softness of kittens
does go a long way toward
making things better

2011-07-01
the lines by her eyes:
complementary match to
her contagious laugh

  1. Paula, I love the first one, the “complementary match” is such a great joining of image and sound. I also like “droplets of water” – it reminded me of many times caught in the rain – it does make me laugh. And “one cloud” – that’s just such a great image – I can totally picture that happening. And “hug from a dear friend” – so true – I think we can all imagine that friend.

Thank you, Richard! I decided to keep my small stones as literally small poems. These haiku don’t necessarily follow the haiku standards, but for this purpose…I’m just going with it! I like your specific feedback on some of the phrases I’ve chosen…it means a lot. Thanks! ~Paula

  2. You have some very nice stones here. I especially like 6, 5, 3 and 2. Friends, kittens, trumpet flowers, clouds…some of my favorite things.

Thanks for visiting my “small stones” page, Linda! I enjoyed my visit to yours, as well. 🙂 ~Paula

  3. Paula– I’ve enjoyed reading all your small stones, but the one that particularly stayed with me was the one about silence. So true!

Thank you, Cara. I often sit with just my laptop in what “seems” like silence. That day…I tried counting the number of sounds I could hear. I stopped counting at over a dozen! Thanks for stopping by for a dip in the river… ~Paula
