A Shell

four walls,
a shell
that contains my body
(although never my mind)

a shell
in the hollow
of that hill

my legs
can no longer
carry me: a shell
of my former self

in my mind
I’m leaping across brooks,
traversing dry, rocky deserts,
strolling through lush woods
where birds sing,

my new reality:
phantom pain,
phantom dreams,
four walls

a shell

P. Wanken

Inspired by The Sunday Whirl’s Prompt #82: phantom, brook, rocky, hollow, leaping, dry, although, new, walls, never, birds, and wood; and posted on Day #12 for the “100 Days of Fall/Winter 2012” challenge.
