Silent Goodbyes

Rockwell painting as an image prompt at Margo Roby: Wordgathering

SILENT GOODBYES

Can it be
that my boy is grown?
College bound.
Even if
I knew what to say, my words
are stuck in my throat.

Man’s best friend?
Boy’s best friend, really…
thirteen years,
he and I.
Ben taught me to speak, but how
do I say goodbye?

Train’s coming
just around the bend.
I can hear
its whistle ~
my future ~ saying hello,
drowning out “goodbye.”

  1. Paula, wonderful! I love the three voices, so perfect with all three of them looking somewhere different in the painting. You captured that so well.
