Tractor Pull of ’76

the County Fair, one of
Grandpa’s favorite times;
with pride I watched him
lift himself up into the seat

his tractor, painted
patriotic colors to match
the special year, shone
in the late summer sun

its rumble reverberated
through my chest
as I clapped my hands
over my ears, muffling its sound

amidst waving friends
and family, he paraded;
later he would pull more
than his weight to victory

Written for Margo Roby’s Tuesday Tryouts – to write about an early memory of a circus, amusement park, or carnival. Growing up in the middle of farmland, it was the County Fair we all looked forward to – some, more than others. The picture is of a toy that Case made for the bicentennial year. Grandpa LeRoy had his Case painted to match. He loved being in that tractor.

  1. I love this. I think it is my favourite poem of yours to date. Look how clear your voice is and how vivid the scene you paint for us. Look around for similar focuses.
